Celtics 15U Team Finishes 2nd at AAU State Qualifying Tournament!

April 2nd, 2013

The Illinois Celtics 15U team had a very successful beginning to its season in the AAU Boys Basketball District Qualifier on March 24th in Lisle, Illinois. The team made it to the Championship game after winning three straight games in the playoff rounds. Unfortunately, they came up a little short, losing to B&B Elite Kappa. The team finished with four wins and two losses for the weekend.

Strong performances from Devon Sams, Zach Grady, Emmanuel Rugamba, Elyjah Goss, Joseph Sieger, and Joey Martucci helped to propel the team to its success.

Head coach Rick Lenoir says, “We are pleased with the effort of the entire team, and we are glad to have some meaningful games under our belt as we jump into this long stretch of April and May tournaments.”

The Bolingbrook-based Illinois Celtics finished 14th in the 128-team National Eighth Grade Division I Tournament in Orlando, Fla. July 15-21. Last year, many of these players were on the Illinois T-Wolves and claimed the North American Youth Sports national championship in Bolingbrook.

Coached by Anthony Muhammad and Ernest Edwards, the team consists of Aaron Jordan, Prentiss Nixon, Devin Sams and Julian Torres, from Bolingbrook; Alex Edwards and Tyler Jackson, Naperville; Dana Hawkins, Hillside; and Glynn Watson, Bellwood.

The Celtics came into pool play as the third-seed in a four-team pool and finished 2-1. They came in second, earning a spot in the championship division.

After a 70-43 first-round loss to the King Street Kings from New Jersey, the Celtics were close to elimination but won a 58-57 nail-biter over the RDU United Celtics out of North Carolina in the consolation round. They followed up with a 58-43 win over the Fairfax Stars out of Virginia, a 58-57 won over Indiana’s Spiece Elite and a 72-53 win over the Soldierz Elite of Arkansas before dropping a 52-39 decision to the Mokan Elite of Kansas.
